Scent Principles

Far beyond a simple product-focused initiative, this process was a deep education for Seventh Generation. Understanding what it means to develop scents that are truly authentic, this journey has resulted in relationships with the farmers supplying the source ingredients, a new appreciation for working with whole ingredients, and passion for bringing these experiences into your home.

Each of the new scent blends adheres to the following criteria:

Environmental and Practical. We are working to reduce our footprint through the use of pure and whole plant and flower essences, rather than using added systems of ingredient production. Whole plant essences are also safer for you to breathe and touch than their synthetic counterparts. And, of course, they are biodegradable.

Healthy and Safe. Plant oils are less likely to create an allergic response. Additionally, unlike synthetic fragrance, plant and essential oils have a physical and emotional relationship with the body—soothing, energizing, relaxing, stimulating, or balancing.

Transparent and Natural. Seventh Generation is committed to using whole and natural plant essences in our blends. None of our scents have been created artificially in order to mimic a scent “idea.” If we couldn't find a way to create a scent blend with natural essences, we pursued another path.

Connection and Impact. One result of developing our new scents is the formation of new relationships around the world, with the suppliers of our essential oils as well as with local farmers and producers.These partnerships are based on a promise to not use endangered or threatened species in the creation of our blends.

Inspiration and Creation. The creative inspiration behind our scent blends is what makes them particularly innovative. Inspired by and built around the idea of a tree, the essences incorporated in our blends draw from all its parts: roots, wood, core, leaf, fruit, seed, and flower.

Present and Future. We've created our scent blends so that they unfold, like a botanical perfume, in your home, in the moment. Scents create memories—powerful memories—that will live on well beyond the initial experience. Our hope is that our new blends will create positive and personal scent memories for everyone in your living home.
